Texas Panhandle Birding Hotspots

The Texas Panhandle is a vast, diverse geographic area. Much of the land is privately-owned, meaning that publicly accessible land on which to bird is scarce. Playas and lakes can be excellent bird habitat, but they often dry up. So an area like Lake McClellan on I-40 near McLean yields a wonderful variety of water birds and passerines when it has water, but the birds are fewer when the lake is dry. But if a birder doesn't mind driving an hour or two, there are always parks, lakes, playas and land worth exploring in the Panhandle.

Birding Hotspots in the Panhandle

Barrett's Treasure Map.
Barrett Pierce prepared this map of the Texas Panhandle showing birding spots, some Christmas Bird Count circles, areas where Lesser Prairie Chickens can be found, and other useful birding information. It is best viewed on a computer rather than a mobile device.
